2010 Appalachia Service Project Mission Trip is a success……
Approximately 60 FOA volunteers, made up of high school and college aged youth and adult advisors from the Trumbull, Connecticut area, recently completed a successful home repair mission trip to Central Appalachia. As part of Appalachia Service Project, Inc.’s (ASP) summer program, our volunteers ventured to Carter County, Tennessee for nine days – departing on June 27th and returning on July 4th.
Some of the projects undertaken by our volunteers included building wheel chair ramps, remodeling bathrooms, fixing roofs, repairing sub-flooring, installing floor tiles and linoleum, wiring an addition, digging footings, sinking piers and a host of other jobs helping these poor families. We bonded with families, felt their love and left with a great sense of accomplishment but also with the knowledge that there is so much more needed (for every family that gets selected for help, seven get turned down).

A big THANK YOU to our supporters……
Since our inception during the Fall of 2009, FOA has accomplished a lot to be proud of. We have incorporated, gained our 501c3 non-profit status, raised more than $50,000 to support various Appalachia related initiatives, collected more than 2,400 individual dental supplies in support of Kids First Dental of Southeastern Kentucky, and helped to enlighten people of the issues faced by the good people of the impoverished Central Appalachia region.
We recognize, however, that we could not have accomplished all of this without the help of all of you. Your time, commitment, partnership, and money have been the foundation for this organization and has enabled the good work that has been accomplished during these last few months.
To our volunteers, donors, and partners, we thank you. Thank you for supporting our various fundraisers – our Fire & Ice SportsCenter event, Taste of Spring Wine and Beer Tasting and Auction, Community Tag Sale, Sevilla Designs Pendant Sale, Kids First Dental dental supply drive, and more. Also, thank you for your willingness to help in the many ways that you have throughout these past several months. You certainly are “Friends".
First Selectman provides FOA with well wishes and praise…..
In recognition of FOA’s efforts, Trumbull, Connecticut First Selectman, Tim Herbst, provided FOA President, Anna Henry, a letter of well wishes and praise The letter, which is provided below, was read aloud to the FOA volunteers and other guests at the Town Hall on the morning of June 27th, just prior to the group’s departure for this year’s Appalachia Service Project trip to Carter County, Tennessee.
FOA would like to extend our own thanks and appreciation for the support of Mr. Herbst and the entire Trumbull community.
Letter from Tim Herbst, Trumbull First Selectman to Anna Henry, FOA President:

Subject: Message to Appalachia Participants
Good Morning
To all of you who are leaving Trumbull this morning to travel to the Appalachian area of Tennessee I want to say thank you.
In my remarks to the Trumbull High School graduates on Tuesday night I challenged them “to consider one more way to give back –volunteerism….I ask you today to find some time to help those in need.”
Each and every one of you is doing just that…….some of you have been meeting this challenge for several years and I commend you all for this.
When you see first hand the impoverished areas of that region, you all know how fortunate we all are to live in this beautiful town. On behalf of the citizens of Trumbull I thank each and every one of you for giving your time to do this….
I wish you all a safe journey……..
Tim Herbst
